Killer Whales, Glaciers, Bears and One Amazing Alaskan Wedding

One of the most amazing, and DEFINITELY one of the most unique weddings I have ever photographed was Kathleen and Jeremy’s wedding this summer in Alaska!! Talk about the perfect backdrop and a photographer’s dream:

alaska photography I arrived in Juneau, and naturally headed directly for the Alaskan Brewing Company.  Quick side note, for strange reasons (taxes and import of ingredients I think), Alaskan beer is strangely expensive to purchase locally even though it’s made right there in Juneau, so to make up for it, there are free (and seemingly unlimited) tastings at the brewery!

The next day was the rehearsal/welcome dinner.  It took place on a ferry and couldn’t have been more spectacular.  We saw bald eagles (Alaskans call them seagulls, pigeons or even sky rats up there because they are so common, but I still thought they were cool), whales, sea lions, millions of salmon, AND killer whales!  Naturally, as we were wildlife watching, we enjoyed a gourmet meal of sushi and King Crab!

Alaska PhotographerThe wedding day was just as gorgeous as the previous day.  Just perfect weather (which apparently, is not necessarily common in Juneau).  Usually my favorite ‘getting ready’ images are the details, but in this case, I really loved the image of Kathleen getting in her dress with her parents in the background:

alaskan wedding photographyIt was so much fun photographing the claddagh ring with the wedding ring.  One of my other favorite weddings of all time was the bride’s brother Tom and Molly’s wedding in Ireland.   The ceremony took place high on a cliff, surrounded by trees and overlooking the ocean at the Shrine of Therese.

Juneau Alaska Wedding Ceremony PhotographerTypically, I prefer as little editing and retouching as possible, opting for the original color image, black and white, or occasionally sepia.  But for just a couple of images a wedding, I love this old fashioned, timeless look.  Even in Juneau, Alaska in 2011, I think these 3 image converted to this look could have been taken decades ago:

destination wedding photographerThere were so many wonderful backdrops for pictures after the wedding!  In the background of the wedding party images is the famous Mendenhall glacier:

Juneau Alaska wedding photographerIf the wedding had ended here, it would have been wonderful.  However, at this point the adventure turned epic!  Kathleen, Jeremy, Antoinette (the bride’s sister) and I hopped into a chartered helicopter to take pictures on glaciers!!  And even more thrilling, Kathleen asked me to ride in front so I could tell the pilot where I wanted him to land!!  Clearly, that was the easiest job of the day because EVERYTHING looked perfect:

Canada and Alaskan Glacier Wedding PhotographersThe next set of images are some of the most incredible scenes and some of my favorite images I have ever taken!  The last picture is a panoramic near the border with Canada in the background!

Destination Wedding Photographer Jensen Sutta PhotographyMy  last trip to Alaska was so early in the summer that it was before the salmon were spawning, so there were no bears to be found.  Once I learned this wedding was during peak salmon season I was thrilled!  But I wasn’t going to take my chances and just hope to see one.  My buddy Fecteau and I chartered a plane to reach Admiralty Island.  It has more Grizzly Bears than the entire lower 48 states combined!  Here are some of my favorite images of the bears, with one of a black bear too (not from Admiralty Island, but from a day later near the Mendenhall Glacier):

wildlife bear photographerThank you to Tom and Molly Walsh, if it wasn’t for you and Ireland, I never would have been in Alaska!  Thanks so much for hiring me Kathleen and Jeremy and congratulations again!!!!  Antoinette, my vote is Italy!

2011 Miracle on 19th Street

This Christmas Day marked the 9th time my wife Kiha and I participated in this non-profit event.  Formerly, the Rock Bottom Foundation, now the CraftWorks Foundation, this Christmas, nearly 2,000 folks attended.  The restaurant closes, and guests are seated and served plated meals with a choice of ham or turkey, with all of the fixings!  In addition, there are toys and games for the kids, flu shots, coats and hats and pictures with Santa.  They really do it right!

Feed the homeless christmas photographyTransportation is provided from several downtown Denver shelters, however, a large line of ‘walk-ins’ lasts throughout the day.  Fortunately, this year the weather cooperated and it wasn’t bitter cold outside!  I enjoy walking up and down the line.  Not only is it fun to chit-chat, but everyone is happy and thankful, plus the light for taking pictures is perfect!

event photography denver jensen suttaI always ask for permission before taking these photos and when I explain the pictures are for the non-profit itself, there is usually an eager reaction!  This year was the first time I brought 4×6 prints to give out from the last event in case I found the same folks.  It was kind of like a scavenger hunt, and unfortunately, I only found 2 folks…

colorado event photography jensen suttaAll in all, it’s just the perfect way to spend the holiday.  Kiha and I are very lucky.  One one hand this day is a reminder of that fact.  On the other, we are just lucky to be in the position to give back.  I hope the photos can the CraftWorks Foundation and continue the tradition of giving!

Renee and Joe – Southern California Wedding Photography

Renee and Joe were married in the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano in Southern California, this November.  Renee’s brother, Doug is one of my best buddies, so this was the perfect occasion to end ‘paternity leave’ a month after Easton was born!

We started with the getting ready photos at Renee’s parents house before heading over to the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Usually, I am positioned in the very front of the ceremony to capture guests entering before the ceremony starts and my 2nd photographer captures this moment..but I LOVE the moment just before the bride and groom walks down the aisle.  The bride and her parents are usually anxious, excited and emotional, and the groom is typically getting last minute advice from his groomsmen, like ‘the car’s still running’, or ‘don’t trip!’:

california wedding photographerThe mission was founded 1n 1775 to expand the territorial boundaries of Spain!  And the ceremony took place in ‘Father Serra’s Church’, with a 300 year old alter from Spain!  It’s the oldest building in California…so cool!

Mission San Juan wedding photosThe rain started coming down in heaps during the ceremony, but the Mission had lots of great overhangs, and Renee had purchased awesome rain umbrellas!

Veterans Day Wedding

At 11:11 am on 11/11/11, I had the pleasure of photographing Cindy and Don’s wedding.  Cindy is the mother of a hero.  Her son, Navy Seal Danny Dietz sacrificed his life in Afghanistan.  Although I went to the same high school as Danny Dietz (and his sister), it wasn’t until the highway dedication when Santa Fe Drive in Littleton, Colorado was changed to Danny Dietz Memorial Highway in 2008 (click to view slideshow) that I met the family.  Since 2008, I have had the pleasure of seeing the family several times through volunteering with the Remembering the Brave organization.

The appreciation of the Military from both Cindy and Don, and reminders of Danny were very abundant.  In the past, my father, and now I, would fly a flag on our homes to honor Veteran’s Day.  This wedding was an entirely different reminder of what the day really means.

Another thank you to Love n Joy Photography for photographing the reception!

CraftWorks Foundation Thanksgiving

My wife Kiha found this amazing program back in 2007 and we have been volunteering each Christmas and Thanksgiving Day ever since.  CraftWorks owns over 200 restaurants across the country, and on Christmas and Thanksgiving, they close the doors to the public to many of them and re-open them to the needy in the community.  In Denver, the program on Thanksgiving feeds over a thousand individuals and families!  This year Kiha’s role was to roam the restaurant handing out kids toys and games.  Here are a few of my favorite images from the day:

Non-profit Denver Thanksgiving PhotographyThe Thanksgiving event we volunteer for is in the downtown Denver Rock Bottom Brewery.  They do a fantastic job coordinating buses from many different shelters around town, but throughout the day, the line is several blocks long with those waiting to be seated that weren’t coming from shelters.

It’s such a neat day on so many levels…

On this day, more than any other, I’m sure to ask permission before taking photos, and when I approached this man and asked how he was, he replied, ‘I’m SO good, I wish EVERYONE was this good’…
